Say wha?
Q: What do editorial interns do?
A: Well, besides the menial tasks of fact checking and researching upcoming articles for the magazine we get to do tons of the stuff like this blog for instance and my (fabulous) posts for the website. My most dreaded days, however, are the days where I’m asked to transcribe interviews >8-o !!!! (Enter Jaws theme music).
Well, I shouldn’t say dreaded it’s actually really cool to hear what actors, musicians and, yes, even social activist (I won’t let this info slide for you yet Gawker) have to say. Where it gets tricky is deciphering what the hell people are exactly saying. Eastern European accents, static, and double negatives are my arch-nemesis and the slow speed and rewind button are my friends. The true test is whether my sanity will still be intact by the end and how many times people will say “you know,” “sort of,” “kind of,” “umm,” “hmm,” etc. People with ADD are also hard to transcribe. You know, the kind of people who change topic in the middle of a sentence and then go back to what they were saying or never go back to it at all. To those people: I despise you.
Luckily, I haven’t contemplated suicide just yet, but I have enjoyed getting to hear some of the most influential people of our times dissect and analyze their work and themselves for my own cramped-hands’ pleasure.
